Renovation set to boost emergency care in Springs - 17 August 2025

Department of Health 2025/08/20 - 22:00

The Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) is set to undergo major transformation as renovations to its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit begin on 22 August 2025.

The project, which is expected to be completed by December 2025, forms part of the Gauteng Department of Health's (GdoH) broader initiative to revitalise public healthcare infrastructure across the province.

This upgrade comes at a crucial time for the community of Springs and surrounding areas, where access to reliable and efficient emergency care is essential.

The renovated A&E Unit will significantly improve the hospital's ability to respond to urgent medical needs, offering faster triage, better patient flow, and modern treatment spaces equipped with updated medical technology. These improvements are expected to reduce waiting times and enhance the overall experience for patients and their families.

During the four-month renovation period, emergency services will be temporarily relocated within the hospital to ensure that care continues without interruption. Services will be moved to areas such as the Out-Patients Department (OPD) and the Female Orthopaedic Ward. Surgical OPD will operate from the Wound Clinic, while Gynaecology OPD will be housed in the Ante-Natal Clinic. A temporary structure will also be set up outside the hospital to accommodate General OPD, Urology, and Medical OPD services, complete with consultation rooms and a waiting area. The Orthopaedic, Dental, and Paediatric Clinics will remain in the OPD.

To manage patient volumes and ensure smooth service delivery, FERH will work closely with other facilities in the Ekurhuleni District to divert patients where necessary. While some inconvenience may be experienced during this time, the GdoH has appealed to the public for patience and understanding, assuring them that the long-term benefits will far outweigh the temporary disruptions.

Beyond improving patient care, the renovation is also expected to have a positive impact on staff morale. Healthcare workers will benefit from a more functional and comfortable working environment, which can lead to increased job satisfaction and better service delivery. A modern A&E Unit not only supports clinical excellence but also fosters a sense of pride and motivation among staff.
