\In an effort to halt the rising incidents of foodborne illnesses particularly among children, the Gauteng Department of Health has taken the Corner-to-Corner campaign to the community of Kliptown in Soweto to empower food vendors with essential food safety knowledge and practices.

With a notable surge in foodborne illnesses in the province, Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasised the importance of education and awareness on safe food handling, preparation and storage techniques including the correct usage of pesticides and rodenticides.

As at Friday, 15 November a total of 507 cases of foodborne illnesses have been reported in Gauteng Province, with 24 fatalities affecting, mainly,  children aged between 3 - 13 years.

During the outreach programme, the MEC together with a team of Environmental Health Practitioners provided practical demonstrations and tips on maintaining hygiene and preventing contamination to equip vendors with the necessary knowledge to protect the health of their customers.

The #CornertoCorner campaign is not only focused on food safety but also aims to transform street corners into spaces of health and wellness. The campaign will continue to offer a variety of health services, including screenings for diabetes and hypertension, HIV counselling and testing, dental care and child immunization for comprehensive health support for the community.
