Gauteng Premier David Makhura has officially opened the newly renovated and refurbished 181 bedded AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Carletonville, west rand on Friday, 14 May.

The facility was previously a mine hospital.  It was donated to the provincial government by AngloGold Ashanti mine in response to Covid-19 pandemic. The hospital is part of the COVID-19 Infrastructure building programme initiated to enable Gauteng through the Department of Health to deliver on COVID-19 containment strategies.

Premier Makhura said the hospital would alleviate pressure as the province prepares for the imminent third wave.

"Our investment in this area is critical to our response against the COVID-19 pandemic. We saw an opportunity as the provincial government to take over the hospital following its closure," said Premier Makhura.

The hospital is a public facility that will aid in extending healthcare to communities in the West Rand. This is expected to relieve pressure on Carletonville and Leratong hospitals.

Premier Makhura noted that infection rates had doubled in Gauteng in the last four days.

"The province has now entered the third wave, with new strains of the novel Coronavirus emerging in different parts of the country," said Makhura.

He further said the priority of government was now on slowing down the infection rate and increasing the pace of the vaccination process.

The facility is equipped with 181 Intensive Care Unit (ICU)Beds, a pharmacy, a mortuary, radiology, physiotherapy facility, and a laboratory, among others.

In addition, the province will also be opening a new clinic in Greens Park, Fochville at the end of May that will form part of the National Health Insurance (NHI) pilot phase rollout, with Merafong Greens Park being the identified rollout area.

Meanwhile, the Sisonke vaccination programme, targeting healthcare workers will be concluding on Sunday, 16 May 2021.

The province will commence with phase 2 1b of the vaccination programme on Monday, 17 May 2021.

This will be a concurrent vaccination process of the persons 60 years and older and healthcare workers who did not get vaccinated in the implementation study phase.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has set up a call centre to assist the elderly with the registration process. Members of the public can access the help service on 0860 428 8364 or by visiting https://vaccine.enroll.health.gov.za/#/.
