South Africa observes National Disability Rights Awareness Month annually between 3 November and 3 December. This year's provincial commemoration will focus on the exacerbated impact of COVID-19 on young women and children with disabilities under the theme: "Disability Inclusive Gauteng by 2030".  

Disability Rights Awareness Month provides a platform for government to report back on measures taken/to be taken to equalise opportunities for persons with disabilities, whilst celebrating the achievements and contributions persons with disabilities continue to make in socio-economic development and nation-building.

Gauteng government is committed to the economic upliftment of persons with disabilities. To date the provincial government has met and exceeded the set 2% employment target of persons with disabilities. As of October 2020, GPG has employed 4455 persons with disabilities. Currently, all provincial departments are working to ensure that all services are accessible to people with disabilities.

Gauteng government has set 5% preferential procurement for companies owned by people with disabilities.

The provincial government continues to advance universal access for people with disabilities, by ensuring that all public facilities  are  accessible to  persons with disabilities, and that they also have  equal access to  economic activities, public employment programmes and skills development opportunities.

Gauteng government has also improved access to housing, healthcare and transport for persons with disabilities.
