Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation (SoS) in Reiger Park, Boksburg, officially opened on Thursday, bringing a new focus on hospitality and tourism while offering comprehensive commerce and entrepreneurship skills.
The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) introduced SoS to bridge the skills gap needed to build the country's economy and increase learners' employment opportunities after matric.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane, speaking at the event, emphasised government's commitment to empowering learners with certified future skills.
"[We are] molding them to become employers rather than employees, propelling South Africa towards a prosperous and entrepreneurial-driven future.
"We are dedicated to transforming the education landscape in Gauteng and shaping it to be aligned with the global economy," said the MEC.
The school provides education on the aviation industry, including cabin crew training and emerging technologies like cryptocurrency and gaming.
Moreover, the school goes beyond theoretical knowledge, actively empowering learners to establish small businesses on the premises and fostering practical experience.
Marketplace Academy CEO Chantyl Mulder expressed her enthusiasm for playing a role in revitalising communities by fostering the growth of essential skills with a particular emphasis on the Reiger Park community.
"It has been a fantastic journey, and I still look forward to it. We are premised on two things, industry standards and academic integrity; nothing else matters.
"We believe in the power of education and collaboration to uplift communities and create economic opportunities. As we grow, we want to create a better future for the children," she said.
Ward Councillor Edith Klaasen shared her overwhelming emotions as the school holds a special place in her heart, having grown up in the area.
"This is my home. My footprints are in the soil of this school as well. This is an occasion that will go down in the history of East Rand, and based on that, I cannot be more thankful. This is a real milestone for our community," expressed Klaasen.
