Members of the Ikusasalethu Youth Development Project (IYDP) have promised the Gauteng Social Development MEC Morakane Mosupyoe that they will continue to empower more youth through their various skills development programmes.

The Alexandra based youth development project declared during a visit by Mosupyoe last Thursday, during her visit to the skills centre and two other sustainable livelihood projects in the Johannesburg Region.

Speaking during a briefing session, Chairperson of IYDP, Constance Benesch said "The project was started in 2013 and formally registered with the Department in 2016, to impact the lives of unemployed youth by mentoring, supporting, and encouraging their livelihood."

"Through counselling, mentoring and intensive development programs, we inspire the unemployed youth which includes substance abuse service users and victims of abuse to be a role models and agents of change by boosting their confidence, and equipping them with the right skills to maximise their potential," said Benesch.

She added that their primary aim was to provide support and accredited training in the fields of: end-user computing, graphic design and multimedia, web design, nail and beauty, entrepreneurship, bricklaying, tiling, plastering, welding, carpentry, and furniture making.

One of the beneficiaries of the programme, Sophie Makhubela from Alexandra township is now a permanent employee of the project after completing her training in Administration.

Speaking to Weekly Bulletin, the 29-year-old administrator said her job was to ensure the smooth running of the organisation.

"In the morning, I need to ensure that everyone complies with Covid-19 protocols and ensure that the students complete their screening forms. I keep track of the day-to-day register for both students and staff," said Makhubela.

She further added that her experience since starting in June last year has been good, and has improved in various aspects of her work.

"I would like to say to young people, stand up and do things for yourselves. There are lessons that are free, don't take them for granted. Always seek for information that will empower you to strive for a better life," she concluded.
