Social Work Supervisors elect teams to support their work

Department of Social Development 2024/03/09 - 22:00

Gauteng Department of Social Development hosted a provincial general meeting for social worker supervisors. The meeting is held every two years to elect the new leadership for social work supervisors.

The first meeting was in 2018, where a committee was elected to lead supervision activities in the province in line with the National Department of Social Development's directive to establish a supervisory structure in each province.

The two-day meeting was held from 04-05 March 2024 at the Vereeniging Municipality Hall in Sedibeng.

A committee made up of eighteen members, with three representatives from each region and institution, was tasked with leading supervision initiatives over the next two years.

During his opening address, Sedibeng Regional Director Tshipiwa Tshikalaha said it was important for the committee to address the mental health of social workers. He added that it was important to create a platform for social worker supervisors to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and identify gaps and challenges within the profession.

Speaking in the same meeting, Corporate Services, Bongani Ngomane, said the department encourages active participation from all attendees. The outgoing chairman, Mr. Van Rensburg, expressed gratitude to the previous committee for their dedication and support during their term. Despite facing numerous challenges, such as resource constraints and time management issues, he acknowledged their efforts in accomplishing tasks with limited resources.

In his parting words, Mr. Van Rensburg advised the incoming chairman to be resilient and proactive, emphasizing the demanding nature of the role. The newly elected chairman, Makwe Sebei from the Tshwane region, highlighted the pressing issue of budget constraints and appealed to the department for additional support in addressing this challenge.

The meeting served as a platform for social worker supervisors to come together, exchange ideas, and chart the course for the profession's development in Gauteng. With a new committee in place, there is optimism for enhanced collaboration and effective leadership in advancing social work practices across
