Department of e-Government 2024/04/04 - 22:00

On the 5th of April 2024, the MEC of the Gauteng Department of e-Government, Mr. Mzi Khumalo alongside school officials, opened a computer lab at East Rand School of Arts (ERSA) in Daveyton at Ekurhuleni. This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing digital access and education in the community.

The opening of the computer lab at East Rand School of Arts comes after the department was made aware of the non-functioning of the lab due to lack of resources such as furniture and computers stolen from the school. The department then made a commitment to provide the needed computers and furniture to restore the lab.

The computer lab, equipped with modern computers and furniture, is set to provide students and educators with access to essential digital tools and resources. Furthermore, the lab will be connected to the Gauteng Provincial Network, the department's free Wi-Fi service, ensuring connectivity for all users. This connectivity will facilitate easier learning and teaching processes, enabling students and educators to access online educational resources and collaborate more effectively.

The MEC, Mzi Khumalo stated that the department's priority is to support the Gauteng Provincial Government by guaranteeing that schools in the province have adequate resources to offer students an excellent education. Hence, the opening of the computer lab also highlights the Gauteng Department of e-Government's commitment to improving access to technology in education. By providing this valuable resource, the department is empowering students at East Rand School of Arts to develop essential digital skills that will prepare them for success in the digital age.

"We were informed about the school's lab's critical position during our last visit to the youth tech expo. With the support of our partners, we took it upon ourselves to restore the stolen items so that the lab may be operational again" MEC Khumalo explained.

Whilst delivering the message of support, a representative from MetroWired expressed that

"ICT infrastructure is the backbone of modern education, empowering learners with limitless opportunities. Embrace the computer lab as your gateway to knowledge and innovation. Harness its power to unlock your full potential and shape a brighter future."

The MEC then did a walkabout in the school and handed over the lab to the school's management. In closing, the Deputy Principal of ERSA, Mr. Mokeko thanked the Gauteng Department of e-Government and all the stakeholders and partners for fulfilling their promise as well as for their continued efforts in investing in the future of these young people.

"The lab will serve as a vital tool for students, encouraging them to explore, learn, and excel in the digital age", he said.
