Licence backlog - A call on licence cardholders to honour appointments

Department of Roads and Transport 2021/01/19 - 23:00

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has cautioned licence cardholders who secure bookings and not honour their appointments that the Department and RTMC are recording this trend.

"We are indeed keeping records of these cardholders who fail to pitch up for their appointments," said MEC Jacob Mamabolo.

This follows a huge outcry of cardholders not being able to access online bookings.

Referring to the poor up-take of available slots, the MEC said "we are however concerned about the poor up take of the available booking slots. In the first two weeks of the new year, we availed 17000 slots to cater to the 35000 driver's licence cards whose validly expires in January this year".

The Department has introduced a series of measures to ensure availability of slots for expired licence cardholders. These include a move to proactively issue slots prioritising licence holders whose licence card validity expire in January 2021.

This is in addition to the Department assisting cardholders by availing slots to ensure licence cardholders whose validity has been extended until end August 2021 are also efficiently assisted to regularise their licences. The RTMC is currently sending text messages to cardholders alerting them, ahead of time, of the expiry of their licence cards. Cardholders are further provided with available booking slots.

The Department has since dedicated 70 percent of its capacity towards addressing the backlog.

Additionally, the Department, working with its entity, the Gautrain Management Agency, is set to roll out kiosks at various Gautrain stations to conveniently enable cardholders whose validity has expired to renew.

To further improve capacity, he announced that "in February, we are looking forward to adding even more capacity into the system. We will be introducing mobile Driving Licence Testing Centres, ensuring that all law-abiding citizens do not struggle to regularise the validity of their driver's licences".

The MEC has also urged driver's license cardholders to update their details on the eNatis system. To update their details, they can visit https://online.natis.gov.za/#/
