Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Morakane Mosupyoe, tabled the 2023/24 budget vote for her department at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on 26 May 2023.
The department has been allocated a budget of R1 billion that will be utilized in arts and sports as a lead driver towards economic empowerment and social transformation in the province.
"This budget will help cement the position of Gauteng as the home of champions where sport and the arts are felt and seen in the forefront of our agenda towards growing Gauteng together for our citizens," said Mosupoyoe.
A total of R194 790 million has been allocated to cultural affairs, which will be used by the programme to identify, develop, support, and promote the arts; and to preserve, protect, and support heritage resources in the province. 
The department will further continue to support the programmes through funding cultural events and Gauteng Activities, which support social cohesion and nation-building. 
Libraries and archival services are allocated R328 841 million towards constructing the new public libraries all across Gauteng. Mosupoyoe said this will give Gauteng residents access to knowledge, resources, educational material and personal development information.  
The sports and recreation sector received an allocation of R365 831 million which will go towards creating an enabling environment for further growth and success in sport and recreation. 
"The budget will go towards building sports facilities in our early childhood development facilities; revamping of our infrastructure in our Township Informal Settlements and Hostel (TISH) areas; school sport (Wednesday league) and wellness programmes."
"Lastly, an allocation of R200 475 million will go towards administration to provide innovative and integrated strategic support services and good governance," added the MEC.
