Tshwane South District has outperformed all districts in the country and maintained its lead as the top performing district in the country.

For the second year in a row and the third time in the past five years, the Tshwane South district has taken the cup.

Tshwane South is the top district nationally, second district is Gauteng West, the third is Gauteng North, the fourth is Johannesburg North and the fifth is Sedibeng in the east of Gauteng,

To honour learners and educators an awards ceremony was held under strict COVID 19 regulations on Wednesday, 25 February 2020 where Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, together with the MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, praised the matric class of 2020 for their performance.

The top overall performing pupils in Gauteng for the 2020 academic year are from the Tshwane South district.

First place was Karla Reinecke from Hoërskool Waterkloof, Carla Dippenaar also from Hoërskool Waterkloof came second and Noelle van der Walt from Hoërskool Menlopark came third

Reinecke said during the exams she followed a study routine that allowed her to prioritise her academic and leisure time. She is going to  further her studies at the  North West University.  She will be  studying a Bachelor of Science (BSC) in Biochemistry.

Gauteng provincial districts took the top five spots in the top 10 nationwide rankings. The province also had 92 schools that obtained 100% pass rate.

Gauteng achieved the most ever candidates qualifying for bachelor studies in 2020, with 49,679 who wrote qualifying with a bachelor pass. This was an improvement from the 43,494 bachelor passes recorded in 2019.

MEC Lesufi condemned communities who disrupted schooling last year saying they are to blame for learners' poor performance.

"Two of our districts suffered major disruptions when parents and civil organisations from Etwatwa, Tokoza, Duduza, Daveyton Sebokeng stopped learners from going to school. I'm sad to announce that the two districts were the worst performing in the province."
