Gauteng government has had to revise its economic policy to deal with the lasting impact COVID-19 will have on the provincial economy.

"We need a new economic model. We need a new approach to social security and food security policy to ensure no one goes hungry and no one is left out," said Gauteng Premier David Makhura.

Presenting the Office of the Premier's budget vote on Thursday 18 June 2020, Premier David Makhura said: "The Growing Gauteng Together (GGT2030) plan would need to be re-imagined and rebooted because the structural problems it sought to address have worsened in scale and  in depth.

Makhura added that it not be business as usual in Gauteng, as COVID-19 threatens to undo the work done in growing the economy.

"We are also embarking on a process of policy review which is essential to the development of responsive and coherent evidence-based policy making.

"The Office of the Premier is playing a central role in rethinking current policies, and spearheading the re-designing of new social and economic policy packages that will ensure that millions of people are included in the post-COVID-19 new economy.

"We have re-organised government decision-making, policy planning, disaster management and service delivery to respond directly to the progression and impact of the pandemic on the lives and livelihoods of the residents of our province," he said.

Makhura said it was important, as more sectors of the economy and schools re-open, to strengthen collaboration and co-operation between all sectors.

We believe a lot has been done and is still being done to ready our public health system for the peak," added Makhura.

He said a lot of hygiene as well as health and safety measures are in place to ensure that various sectors of the economy will comply with WHO protocols.

The province has implored a risk-adjusted strategy which means government will regularly monitor the outbreaks and adjust its approach when necessary.
