Gauteng government partners with Clinix in the fight against substance abuse

Department of Social Development 2023/11/11 - 22:00

On Monday, 06 November 2023,  MEC for Social Development, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Mbali Hlophe welcomed the first intake of substance users in a new partnership with Clinix Foundation.

Clinix Foundation was registered as an inpatient treatment facility in terms of section 19 of the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act 70 of 2008 to provide inpatient treatment services.

The Facility is registered for and will be admitting 119 substance abusers.

Hlophe said she was ecstatic with such partnerships as they will change the NPO partnership in the department.

“Today has seen admissions of the first 85 service users in the facility, with the reminder of 34 to be taken in the next two weeks. Partnering with such organizations indeed continue to bring and instill hope to those that we service. We want government to partner with organizations that are reliant and have sustained themselves in the past, to reduce complete reliability from the state.

Hlophe further indicated that Gauteng Government is exploring possibilities of expanding the rehabilitation programme from 6 weeks to 6 months, as 6 weeks does not seem to be enough for rehabilitation.

“We also want to expand on the programme offering to be able to respond adequately to needs of beneficiaries. This includes expanding on skills development and sustainable programmes.

Clinix Foundation will be offering six-week primary treatment programme and upon completion they will be discharged into a halfway house programme where they will attend skills development programme for a minimum period of six month.
