In commemoration of National Month of Deaf People, Audiology and Speech Therapy Department at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital increased awareness to both staff and patients recently.

The purpose of the day was to draw attention to deaf people; their accomplishments as well as challenges that they face in their daily lives.

The day was also used to educate the public about hearing loss; deafness; deaf culture as well as sign language so they can easily communicate with deaf people in communities.

Hospital CEO, Dr Nkele Lesia said: "Deafness is not a choice and it is important that we do regular tests so we can be assisted immediately and hearing challenges are identified and managed accordingly."

She applauded Audiology and Speech Therapy Department for making time to teach community members ways on how to communicate with people who cannot hear.

"It is very important to acknowledge people with hearing challenges and accept that they are capable, able and intelligent.  Let us accommodate and not isolate them in our communities," concluded Dr Lesia.
