Infrastructure Portfolio Committee visits WK Du Plessis LSEN construction site and other DID projects in Ekurhuleni

There was a lot of activity at the WK Du Plessis LSEN construction site, in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni Metro, on the 23 of May 2025 when the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Infrastructure Portfolio Committee undertook an oversight of projects managed by the Department of Infrastructure Development. The committee was led by the Acting Chairperson Lesego Makhubela in the inspection on loco of the project site assess the progress, challenges, quality of the works done by DID.
The project team reported that the newly rebuilt Dr. WK Du Plessis School was progressing well and had achieved 97% completion as at the date of the sited visit. This new-state-of-the-art school is a modern facility specially and will accommodate 570 learners from Grade R to Grade 12.
The GPL Committee was joined by Deputy Director General for Education and Other Government Buildings [STARS] Mmakwena Selepe, the IPM Mr. Fanie Makhanya, CPM Mr. Nape Monakedi, Chief Director Education Infrastructure Dr. Refiloe Malete, the contractor representatives, and other professionals.
The contractor's scope of works consists of the construction and outlay of new classroom blocks, Library, Laboratories, Admin block, Refuse Yard, Pumps Plant room, Generator room, Guardhouse, Boys and Girls Hostels, Workshop and External Works. The old facility was completely demolished as part of the asbestos eradication programme led by the Gauteng Department of Education. Learners were temporarily accommodated in mobile units.
The Committee team expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work done so far, before proceeding to another DID project that being implemented at the Benoni Department of Roads and Transport where refurbishment works to the Driving, Licensing and Testing Centre (DLTC) project were also on course. The DID project team said refurbishments were planned for nine units in the building with one block having already been completed. The project team would implement other works, including rezoning to ensure the facility complies with the required building standards.
The DID is the main infrastructure delivery arm of Gauteng Provincial Government.
