‘KICK IT’ documentary receives international recognition

​The flagship television series, ‘Kick It’ has received a major boost following its selection by the International Public Television Screening Conference as one of the top 64 productions from 30 countries.

Kick It, is a Gauteng Department of Social Development 13-part television series that was aired on SABC1 and hosted by Israel Matseke, famously known as “GP Ma-Orange” who is one of the ambassadors of Gauteng City Region (GCR) Social Movement Against Drugs and Substance Abuse.

The documentary captured the vast dynamics of substance use disorder in families, workplaces and communities.

It reflected individual stories of hope and showcased individuals who had substance used disorders and have undergone treatment and were reintegrated into their families and communities.

Lungelo Dhladhla, who is a founder and chief executive of Mindset Concept expressed her excitement upon hearing the good news.

She said, “It is a big achievement for our craft and most importantly it is a huge achievement for us individually, the company and the country at large."

Dhladhla added that being on the international stage was not to get an award but for the appealing documentary reality show that speaks about the social ills South Africans should see.

"This is advocacy content and many wanted to find out more about what kind of impact it would have. This platform aims to show what kind of content is empowering and uplifting South Africa," said Dhladhla.

When asked what were some of the issues South Africa faced which were highlighted in the documentary, Dhladhla said drug and substance abuse was one of the key issues.

"We wanted to show how drug abuse breaks families and communities, as well as the work government was doing in communities along with Non-Government Organisations," added Dhladhla.
