The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development and Property Management (DID) has completed 56 infrastructure projects during the current political term.
Of the 56, 32 are on behalf of the Department of Education, 15 for Health and nine other departments.
This was revealed by MEC Tasneem Motara when she tabled the department's 2021/2022 annual report.
Key projects completed include two new schools, namely, Noordgesig and Mayibuye Primary School, the construction of two new clinics and three libraries.
Within these projects, there was the construction of wards for COVID-19 patients at Chris Hani Baragwanath (500 beds), Dr George Mukhari and Jubilee Hospitals, both with the installation of 300 beds inside additional wards.
"These projects bear testimony that we are taking the lead in making Gauteng a big construction site that creates a world of economic opportunity for all our communities," said Motara.
During the period under review, the department also commenced the major construction and refurbishment of Ribane Laka Secondary School in Mamelodi; the demolition and rebuild of WK Du Plessis School for learners with special needs in Springs, the construction and refurbishment of Inkululeko Yesizwe Primary School in Vlakfontein; among others.
Motara said the department was working closely with communities to stop the unacceptable land invasion of project sites reserved for constructing critical public facilities.
"We are determined as government that the projects will and must be successfully completed."
With property management, a key responsibility of the department- payment of two land parcels for the Department of Education in Soshanguve and Ekangala were concluded.
During the 2021/22 financial year, 74 692 work opportunities were created, while 1950 beneficiaries were trained in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
Opportunities were created in four sectors: infrastructure, non-State, environment, and culture and social.
