Department of e-Government 2025/03/06 - 22:00
On the 24 of February 2025, the Gauteng Department of e-Government hosted the highly anticipated Youth Tech Expo, a dynamic initiative aimed at equipping young people with opportunities in the ICT sector. The event served as a vital platform to unlock pathways for youth to thrive in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
The expo was more than just an event; it was an opportunity for government officials, industry leaders, and young people to engage directly. It provided a space for open discussions about the challenges young individuals face and how ICT can be harnessed to create innovative solutions. Addressing attendees, MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini emphasized the importance of empowering youth through technology and fostering a culture of innovation and leadership.
The Department of e-Government remains committed to expanding access to digital opportunities, particularly in Townships, Informal Settlements, and Hostels (TISH). Recognizing the high unemployment rates in these areas, the expo aimed to bridge the gap by introducing programs that offer skills training, mentorship, and employment pathways.
Recent statistics from Stats SA (2024) highlight the urgency of such initiatives, with South Africa's official unemployment rate standing at 32.9%, affecting over 7.9 million individuals, many of whom are young people. The youth unemployment rate in 2023 was recorded at a staggering 49.14%, exceeding the national average. These figures underscore the critical need for interventions that equip young people with the skills and knowledge to enter the job market successfully.
A key focus of the expo was the collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders. MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini highlighted the significance of Public-Private Partnerships in unlocking training and employment opportunities for young people.
Over the years, various industries, including ICT, banking, insurance, and manufacturing have contributed to previous expos by:
- Providing training programs in Entrepreneurship, Literacy, Life Skills, and Certified Microsoft Fundamentals.
- Offering bursaries to enable young people to further their studies.
- Facilitating in-service training and employment placements in key industries.
- Supporting female entrepreneurs in Gauteng.
- Donating tablets and computers to enhance digital access.
- Assisting youth-led start-ups and helping job seekers with CV creation.
Building on the successes of past expos, the department aims to expand these opportunities even further in upcoming events.
MEC Bonginkosi Dhlamini encouraged the youth in attendance to seize the opportunities presented at the expo. "Your future is in your hands," he remarked, urging young people to adopt a proactive mindset and make the most of the resources available to them. He emphasized the importance of determination, resilience, and a commitment to personal growth as key factors in overcoming challenges and achieving success.
As the new year unfolds, the department remains steadfast in its mission to empower youth through technology, drive economic development, and create sustainable opportunities for the next generation.
