The construction of the New Rotara School for Learners with Special Needs is progressing well in Carletonville, Merafong Local Municipality, following commencement of works earlier this year. The installation of basic bulk infrastructure such as drainage and sewer pipes has been completed, and the project is now focused on the laying of foundations and platforms. The new facility is located at a different site and will replace the existing school built on unstable dolomitic land and lacks the capacity to meet local demand.

The new Rotara LSEN school is one of the key social infrastructure investment projects funded by Gauteng Provincial Government to boost the socioeconomic fortunes of the western development corridor of the province. The Accounting Officer at the Department of Infrastructure Development Ms Masabata Mutlaneng said the project will create job opportunities for local communities and increase the total value of immovable public assets in the region. The project will also help impart skills to the participants through the different construction phases.

The project manager said the scope of work includes the construction of classrooms for Grade R, Senior Phase, Intermediate Phase, Foundation Phase, a Therapy block, Administration Blocks, Kitchen, and a Multipurpose Hall. Other facilities include a Library, Computer Labs, Recreational and Sports amenities, boarding and dining facilities. The project also includes the construction and installation of auxiliary facilities such as Refuse Yards, Pump Room, Water Tanks, Wash Bays, and Bus Sheds.

"The project is structured to promote participation and opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals, aligning with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) framework. This initiative provides employment and skill development through active involvement within the project, as well as knowledge transfer through training programs."

The project remains on track to provide a high-quality environment conducive for effective learners and teaching. Some of the facilities taking shape in the project include the Administration blocks and Guardhouse that are currently at roof level while the foundations of the Refuse Yard and Woodwork block have been completed.
