Building on the strides achieved and the firm foundation laid in the 6th administration under her leadership, the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has committed to accelerate the delivery of quality health services to communities across the province.
Nkomo-Ralehoko, who was reappointed to the Health and Wellness portfolio when Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced his cabinet this past week, emphasised on the need to move with urgency in pursuing priorities of the 7th Administration.
"We are entering a critical phase in our mission to transform the Gauteng health system and deliver world-class healthcare services to citizens. We have to pick up our pace of delivery and ensured that the people of Gauteng receive the quality care they deserve," said the MEC.
These priorities include the upgrading and maintenance of healthcare facilities, reducing the burden of disease by intensifying preventative care and health promotion, improving patient experience of care and leveraging the power of technology to streamline patient management and improve efficiency.
MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said that the work of the 7th Administration is more pivotal as part of the phased -in approach for the rollout of the National Health Insurance.
"I am honoured to have been afforded an opportunity to finish what we started during my short stint at the Department. We now have an opportunity to realise the bold plans we had started working on to fundamentally change the state of public health in the province," said the MEC.
Some of the achievements attained by the Gauteng Department of Health under Nkomo-Ralehoko's leadership include:
The provincial launch of the I Serve with a Smile campaign in an effort to improve patient experience of care, enhance staff attitudes and bolster morale among our healthcare workers.
The implementation of the Health Information System to enable the one-patient-one-file system and kickstarting the digitisation of 8 million patients records across public health facilities in the province.
The opening of new healthcare facilities including the Orchards Clinic in Johannesburg, Zone 17 Clinic in Sebokeng, a 60-bedded Bertha Gxowa Mental Health Unit, the refurbishment of the old and dilapidated Helen Joseph Hospital's Emergency Department and Zola Dental Clinic amongst others.
The introduction of the #AsibeHealthyGP wellness campaign to promote positive health outcomes by encouraging healthy lifestyle living through the mobilisation of sectors of society to participate in healthy lifestyle activities.
The strengthening of governance systems by ensuring that all clinic committees are appointed, and functional, mental health review boards are in place, and a robust oversight programme is implemented across all healthcare facilities
"We have a good sense of what the priority areas are. The next 100 days will be critical in ensuring that the departmental machinery is well calibrated and is equal to the task before us," stated MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
