Gauteng Premier David Makhura has told the community of Vuka in Sharpeville to come out in their numbers to get the COVID-19 jab which will help us return to the things we love such as attending sporting, cultural, religious and entertainment events.

"Let's keep the momentum and come out in our numbers to get vaccinated. Vaccination can help us return to the things we love and do the things we need for our survival."

Premier Makhura addressed the community during his door to door visit where he further demystified myths around the COVID-19 vaccines.

"Come get your jab, all the myths you hear about the virus are not true. I stand here today because I have been vaccinated and I can ensure all of you that these vaccines work. I was ill for a long time after contracting COVID-19 last year but now I am much stronger and healthier because of the COVID-19 vaccine," Premier Makhura said on Friday.

He was accompanied by Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi and Emfuleni Executive Mayor, Gift Moerane.

They were in the area to also monitor progress at the Vaal University of Technology's (VUT) pop-up vaccination site that is targeting university students and Vanderbijlpark residents. The site offers both walk-in and drive-through services.

The Sedibeng District is one of the regions which has seen a low uptake of the vaccine since the mass vaccination campaign started earlier this year.

The Premier encouraged the community, especially young people to make use of the mobile vaccinations available in the region.

As part of bringing vaccines closer to the people, Gauteng is working on ensuring that vaccination programmes are accessible to the public within 5km of their homes.

"The Gauteng provincial government, working with various partners, is committed to ensuring that the vaccination programme is accessible to the public that is why today we have a pop-up vaccination site here at your doorstep."

The provincial government has called on all adults to get vaccinated at any vaccination site across the province as they all allow walk-ins to ensure they leave no one behind. People will be assisted with the registration process and vaccination at the site.
