The Marivate Community Hall in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, was alive with harmonious sounds as over a hundred and twenty (120) Persons with Disabilities took to the stage to showcase their talents in song, poetry, and dance.

According to Social Worker Lawrence Maphoto from the Springs office of the Gauteng Department of Social Development, the aim of day was to promote awareness of the capabilities and contributions of Persons with Disabilities, and to instill a sense of pride in them recognizing that they are equal citizens.

“Moreover, we are responding to Article 30 of the United Nations Report which recognizes the right of Persons with Disabilities to take part on an equal basis with others in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sport,” said Maphoto.

The regional eisteddfods, observed under the theme “Nothing about us, without us” take place annually in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all Persons with Disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.

“This day is all about recognizing their needs, to promote and protect their human rights with specific reference to raising awareness throughout society,” added Maphoto.

One participant with a physical disability and a wheelchair user called on society to protect Persons with Disabilities particularly women and girls.

“[Ngiyayi zonda indoda ehlukumeza abafazi nabantwana],” she said in IsiZulu, which basically meant I hate men who abuse women and children.
