Minister of Social development Lindiwe Zulu has donated much-needed essentials to twenty-three Gender-Based Violence shelters in Gauteng.
Minister Zulu who was joined by the Gauteng Department of Social Development in partnership with Motsepe Foundation donated blankets, sanitisers, sanitary towels, antibacterial wet wipes, soap bars, t-shirts and masks. ​
Minister Zulu said the department strongly believes in supporting those who are being abused or affected by violence; continue our strong stand in the fight to end gender-based violence in our communities.
"We are grateful to have such initiatives which aim to give aid to Shelters however, we must not pride ourselves in having too many Gender-Based Violence Shelters because it speaks to our failure as a community and as Government," said the minister.
Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, CEO of Motsepe Foundation said the country needs a political will, men and women who are sensitive to and committed to promoting gender equality for the overall benefit of society.
She also revealed that South Africa is one of the most violent places in the world, ranked 38 out of 163 countries.​
"All of us living in South Africa are inundated by reports of the horrific and senseless murder, rape and maiming of women, children, queer folk and, in some instances, men. 
Survivors require dedicated resources over a long period to help them rebuild their agency and resilience after trauma.
"If you don't have funds to donate, but can share professional skills, we'd love to have you on board. It's a beautiful way to give back to be part of reshaping our society," Moloi-Motsepe added.
