On the 03 of September 2025, MEC for Infrastructure Development and CoGTA Jacob Mamabolo, joined by the Multi-disciplinary Infrastructure Team (A-Team), visited the Dr WK DuPlessis Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) school in Springs. The purpose of the visit was to monitor progress since MEC's last visit. This visit forms part of DID's targeted approach to strengthening internal capacity and improving the efficiency of infrastructure delivery. The old school is replaced with the new brick-and-mortar structure which is compliant with Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) standards.

The new school will accommodate 570 learners from Grade R to Grade 12 and has a boarding facility. The comprehensive scope of work includes the construction of classroom blocks, a library, science laboratories, an administration block, a refuse yard, a guardhouse, boys' and girls' hostels, a workshop, multipurpose/dining hall, and external works.

DID Internal Project Manager Fanie Makhanya and the contractor briefed MEC on the current works taking place onsite and the technical challenges encountered. The IPM led the walkabout for the team to observe physical progress on the works done onsite so far.

"These site visits allow us to intervene in cases where there are challenges so that we avoid delays in the construction of projects. With a motive of providing direct support to our project teams, we had to be on the ground and see the results of our iDEP system reports so that we can intervene accordingly," MEC Mamabolo.

Despite the slow progression negatively impacting the completion of the projects, DID remains committed in ensuring that challenges are addressed and that projects are completed with greater speed, efficiency and accountability.
