Film Industry nominates departments anti-substance abuse documentary series “Kick It”

Department of Social Development 2022/08/09 - 22:00

The Gauteng Social Development MEC Morakane Mosupyoe has welcomed the nomination of “KICK IT” a documentary series on substance abuse, by the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA).

The department’s second season of the documentary series “KICK IT” was aired on the public broadcaster SABC1, at 16h30 on Mondays, and has received nominations under two categories: The Best Educational Programme and Best TV Presenter.

“As the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG), we welcome the SAFTA nominations of our very own anti-substance abuse programme Kick It, which has indeed given insight into the world of substance abuse in the province,” said Mosupyoe.

She added, “We also congratulate Israel Matseke, also known as ‘GP-MaOrange’ for the nomination of Best TV Presenter. He has certainly been a key role player in the production and been one of our ambassadors in the social movement against drugs and substance abuse.”

The first season of Kick It received a SAFTA in 2019 for the Best Factual Educational Programme. It has gained popularity and created a better understanding for people suffering from substance use disorders.

The success of the first season paved way for production of the second season, which captured the vast dynamics and realities of substance use disorders in families, workplaces and communities.

The series reflected individual stories of hope and triumph, showcasing individuals with substance use disorders, those who have undergone treatment and those who were re-integrated within their families and communities, whilst also highlighting available treatment services at community-based level.
