Breaking Barriers, Building Future

Department of Community Safety 2025/08/12 - 22:00

My name is Cynthia Makhubela. I was born and raised in Basani, a small village within the township of Elim in Limpopo, a place that shaped my values and principles. Growing up in a close-knit community where people cared for one another, I learned early on the importance of fairness, dignity, and respect. Discipline and hard work were instilled in me from a young age, and these principles continue to guide me today.

My educational journey began at Hluvuka High School, after which I pursued a qualification in Labour Relations at Tshwane University of Technology. Driven by a strong sense of justice, I was fortunate to join the Gauteng Department of Community Safety in 2019 as an intern in the Employee Relations Unit. This experience gave me valuable practical exposure to my field of study.

In October 2022, I was appointed as a Secretary in the Traffic Management Unit, a role I held for about seven months. However, my passion for Employee Relations led me back to the unit. I find great fulfilment in engaging with employees from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, as every day presents a new opportunity to learn.

One of the highlights of my career was representing the Department as an Initiator in a disciplinary case, a moment that solidified my commitment to and passion for the Employee Relations field. Today, my responsibilities include providing administration support within HRM – Employee Relations, managing the ER database, producing progress reports on cases, and advising employees on labour-related matters. My work also involves collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure our Department's mandate is met efficiently. What I value most is knowing that my role contributes to the safety and well-being of communities in Gauteng.

Being a woman in the safety sector is both powerful and humbling. I appreciate the strength, resilience, and empathy that women bring into this space. Women have the unique ability to lead with both heart and determination, qualities that are vital in safety and community engagement. I am proud to be part of a generation breaking barriers and paving the way for others.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, reading, exploring nature, and engaging in wellness activities such as walking and gardening. These moments allow me to recharge and find balance.

Building resilient economies for women starts with ensuring access to education, resources, networks, and funding. We need to invest in female entrepreneurship, close the gender pay gap, and create safe working environments where women can thrive. Equally important is mentorship and representation, women need to see other women succeed in order to believe it is possible for them too.

To every woman with a dream, never doubt your worth or your voice. You are capable, resilient, and deserving of every opportunity. Challenges will come, but they are part of the journey. Stay focused, keep learning, and surround yourself with people who uplift you. Remember, every step you take towards your goal is a victory. Keep going – your future is waiting.
