Gauteng roads play a crucial role in economic development- 26 April 2021

MEC for Roads and Transport, Jacob Mamabolo says roads make a crucial contribution to economic development, growth and bring important social benefits to the province.

MEC Mamabolo was speaking on Friday 23, April 2021 during the Smart Mobility Weekends Campaign at the Frekkie Meyer Boulevard near the Emerald Casino. 

The campaign is an initiative of the department in partnership with the City of Joburg taking its road infrastructure maintenance drive to different parts of the Gauteng province.

Smart Mobility Weekends campaign places primary focus on pothole patching, vegetation clearing, road markings, replacing and installing signage and fixing traffic lights. 

The aim of the campaign is to improve the overall condition of the province's road network.

The initiative is in line with the Gauteng Provincial Government's vision of Growing Gauteng Together (GGT2030) through the delivery of a world-class road infrastructure that promotes economic growth, social cohesion and inclusivity. 

MEC Mamabolo further said: "Drainage structures must be kept free of debris and obstructions."

As part of its contribution to the GGT2030 vision, the department has cast its focus on improving roads and transport infrastructure to facilitate for smart, convenient, and efficient movement of people and goods.

The Smart Mobility Weekends campaign will continue for the next six months to ensure that the quality of the city's road network and its infrastructure is improved.
