The Department of Health in Gauteng took its vaccination drive to the Vaal University of Technology, as part of efforts to reach the target of 10 million vaccination by December.

Gauteng government took the vaccination roll-out programme to the Sedibeng District after it noted that most people were not taking the jab in the region.

Portia Motsoeneng, a third-year student from the Vaal University of Technology was among the first in line to receive the jab. She believed that taking the vaccine was her civic duty and an act of kindness to the people around her.

"To me, it is important to take the vaccine because some of our students were infected by the virus, so I am taking the vaccine to protect myself from the virus and protect people around me. Another thing is that as students we are coming from various communities, so you are not sure who is carrying the virus," Motsoeneng said.

The pop-up site will be based at VUT's Isak Steyl Stadium, Playfair Boulevard, CE6, Vanderbijlpark, and will be open between 9 am to 3 pm for three days.

The Gauteng Health Department is diversifying its vaccine strategy to boost its vaccination numbers. Mobile pop-up sites have been activated throughout the Gauteng City Region.

The mobile site was also activated at Faraday Taxi Rank in Johannesburg this morning.

All persons 18 years and older are encouraged to visit the pop-up vaccination site to receive the jab. COVID-19 vaccines protect against severe illness, hospitalisation and death in the event one contracts the coronavirus.
