Gauteng Premier, David Makhura has owed to take action against all corrupt officials and business people involved in procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the Gauteng province.

Premier Makhura was responding to questions during a virtual Gauteng Provincial Legislature sitting last month.

Premier Makhura said funds that were looted should be recovered back.

"This looks like there was a proper plan designed to ensure that rules were not followed, and as quickly as possible for people to make a quick buck, we want the money to be recovered.

"It means that there are people in the system and in business who think they can, at a slightest opportunity available to do business in an unethical way," he said.

In July 2020, during the command council meeting, Premier Makhura reported that 102 companies were being investigated by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in relation to the procurement of PPE.

Subsequent to that, on Wednesday, 30 September, Premier Makhura placed Head of Department of Health Professor Mkhululi Lukhele on precautional suspension following the recommendations of the investigations by the Special Investigative Unit (SIU).

"The SIU found that the HOD failed to exercise responsibility in the awarding of contracts in certain companies for the procurements of goods and services, in relations to government's response to COVID-19 pandemic," said Premier Makhura.

On Saturday, 3 October, HOD Lukhele handed over his resignation letter with immediate effect.
