The Head of Gauteng Department of Health, Professor Mkhululi Lukhele, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.

This comes after Prof Lukhele was placed under precautionary suspension by Premier David Makhura following recommendations of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

Speaking to the media, Gauteng Provincial Government Spokesperson, Thabo Masebe said Lukhele should have acted accordingly to avoid fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

"HOD of the Department of Health should have made sure that proper procedures were followed. By him not acting accordingly the department incurred fruitless and wasteful expenditure and he must be held accountable," said Masebe.

The SIU's updated report to the Premier had also implicated the Deputy Director General (DDG): HR and Corporate Services, Andile Gwabeni in the COVID-19 procurement irregularities and he was served with a letter of suspension on Thursday, 01 October 2020.

Meanwhile Premier Makhura reiterates that all those involved in COVID-19 corruption and malfeasance must be brought to justice.
