Women rise despite treatment received from society

Department of Social Development 2019/08/28 - 22:00

In an effort to celebrate the role women play in society, on Friday the Gauteng Department of Social Development hosted a Women's Month event in Boipatong Community Hall, Sharpeville.

The event was organised to engage the community on social issues affecting women and to provide them with opportunities that will enhance them economically.

Amongst the participants were the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO).

One of the key issue that was discussed is that of gender-based violence and rejection to occupy high positions in the working environment.

Sergeant Ngobani from Boipatong SAPS encouraged women to speak up when they encounter any form of abuse.

"Women must always be at the forefront and must receive equal treatment like men. You play a significant role in the society and through such celebration, you must be encouraged to stand up and be counted," said Ngobani.

Mathapele Mokale from NICRO also reminded women to take part in business and not let such opportunities to be grabbed only by men.

Young women were also encouraged to take education serious and not rely only on government.

"It is through education that young women will liberate themselves," added Mokale.
