Gauteng has recorded 219 new cases of COVID-19. This translates to 4 763 active cases, the Department of Health said on Tuesday.

This comes as more than 3 596 150 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the province. A total number of 3 101 people are currently in hospitals for COVID-19.

Infections have been on a decline since government introduced Adjusted Level 3 Regulations in August.

However, experts indicate that the numbers of active cases are not decreasing at the rate expected and are cautioning that the third wave may overlap with the predicted fourth wave.

Gauteng MEC for Health, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi said there was still a long way to go, as far as vaccinations were concerned.

"The joint efforts between government and the various partners are bearing fruit. However, we still need to move with speed to vaccinate as many people as possible ahead of the anticipated fourth wave of COVID-19," said MEC Mokgethi.

Gauteng government is aiming to vaccinate at least 70% of the population by December and so far, 13 892 301 shots have been administered.

With the country expected to enter a fourth wave of the virus in November, government encourages people to vaccinate to minimise the impact.

The Gauteng province is allowing walk-ins at vaccination sites for people to be vaccinated, regardless of whether they have been registered on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) or not.
