This year marks the 47 anniversary of the June 16 Soweto Uprising. Each year on this day, South Africans recognize and celebrate the role played by the youth of 1976 in the liberation of the country. Unemployment rate in the Gauteng Province stands at approximately 2.2 million of this population. For this reason, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) commemorates Youth Day by embarking on a recruitment drive in response to the high unemployment rate in the province.
The purpose of the Jobs Fair initiated by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, is to expose the youth and residents of Gauteng on the opportunities that the government provides. In doing so, job opportunities were created by advertising all available and funded vacancies within the GPG department entities. "This is done to keep up with our commitment to tackle unemployment in the province. As the Provincial Government, we are committed to taking decisive decisions with speed on the issue of unemployment. Less talk, more work", said Premier Lesufi.
Premier Lesufi has emphasized a fact that, this year, June 16, will not be about rallies and long speeches, instead it will be about giving job seekers an opportunity to find employment. "We are filling all vacant and funded permanent jobs across all departments within the GPG we open opportunities for all. Our mission is to crush unemployment and hopelessness in our province," said Premier Lesufi.
History was made as thousands of job seekers flooded different sites within the province for assistance in applying for jobs offered. Various department officials have managed to assist all on the day and ensured that applications were completed correctly and advised on the online registrations and applications.
