The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements (GDHS) officially launched two student accommodation facilities on Thursday, 17 October 2024, as part of its broader CBD revitalisation initiative in Johannesburg.
These new housing developments in Doornfontein and Brixton were developed in collaboration with the Gauteng Partnership Fund (GPF) and Future Growth to address the growing demand for student accommodation in the province.
The facilities will provide much-needed accommodation for approximately 378 students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Wits University.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Gauteng Partnership Fund (GPF), Amanda Clark, expressed deep appreciation for the partnership with Future Growth as the project collaboratively has enabled the delivery of affordable human settlements for students.
Addressing the launch, the MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, highlighted the importance of these developments in tackling the student housing crisis.
"These launches mark a significant step forward in addressing a long-standing crisis, with demand for student housing exceeding supply considerably. The successful completion of these projects is more than just a win. It represents a critical investment in the future of our province."
Motara said the initiative will empower students to thrive academically and socially by providing safe and affordable housing.
"As we face the challenges of a growing housing crisis and an impending water shortage, it is vital that the students living in these residences adopt water-wise practices," added Motara.
Craig Cornish, chairperson of the GPF Board, underscored the role of these projects in the broader inner-city revitalisation strategy.
"These projects are situated within a critical node of Johannesburg's educational and industrial sectors, making it ideal for student accommodation. They are also close to many transportation options, giving students easy access to academic and recreational facilities.
"The black-owned property development companies responsible for the projects contributed to the transformation of the property market. Both these companies have delivered high-quality accommodation that meets and exceeds the Department of Higher Education and Training's recommended minimum standards for student housing," said Cornish.
Gauteng Provincial Government is committed to sustainable living, which is essential for the future of our province. Department of Human Settlements is launching another completed student accommodation project in East Pretoria Gardens, which will provide 300 students with accommodation.
