Department of Roads and Transport 2022/06/09 - 22:00

The Department, in collaboration with the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), has opened a first of its kind, Smart Driving Licensing Testing Centre (DLTC) at the Midrand Gautrain Station. The event took place on Thursday, 09 June 2022.

The DLTC is part of new licensing centres to be delivered by the Department to bring services closer to residents and forms part of added capacity to address driver license card renewal backlogs.

MEC Jacob Mamabolo in his remarks indicated that "this state-of-the art facility gives us an opportunity to efficiently deliver licences and other related services to the people. Working with GMA and RTMC, in just over two months we have delivered the facility".

"We are delighted to unveil to the people of Gauteng the state-of-the-art DLTC at Gautrain Station. It's a first of its kind, a benchmark, best practice and a good standard service delivery initiative. People of Gauteng are in for a great experience for a driver's license renewal service" added the MEC.

The centre also provides full online and cashless services as part of the Provincial Government's commitment to exploring new technologies and process optimisation.

It is estimated that the license renewal service will take approximately ten (10) minutes, implying that more people will be serviced in a most efficient way possible. This innovative concept is a game changer in Growing Gauteng Together through Smart Mobility plan.

Embracing the use of renewable energy, the centre is also solar-powered ensuring that even during load shedding services will continue to be provided.

Representing RTMC CEO Advocate Makhosini Msibi said that "we are dealing with smart card technology where no cash (cashless environment) is involved in the application process. This will mitigate and eliminate fraud". He added that it is important to note the centre will operate on online booking basis only.

The CEO further cautioned that 'ordinarily corruption in terms of the driver's renewal are because of 'runners' who will then demand payments for booking slots on behalf of residents. These operations have ceased to be an order of the day, here you come as per appointment, a law enforcer becomes the centre manager. This approach will assist in mitigating serious issues of corruption".

GMA CEO William Dachs reiterated that the licensing centre will operate between 08h00–17h00 on weekdays and from 09h00–15h00 on weekends.
