Strides in dealing with staffing issues - 22 June 2025

Department of Health 2025/06/23 - 22:00

The Gauteng Department of Health is making strides in tackling staff shortages across clinics and hospitals in the province. This comes amid concerns raised in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature regarding the impact of vacant posts on healthcare delivery and staff workloads.

The MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko when responding to legislature questions gave an assurance that contrary to widespread claims, there is no moratorium on the filling of clinical posts within the Department. While budget constraints limited recruitment in the past, the Department has taken decisive steps to prioritise critical appointments and ensure the sustainability of public healthcare services.

"As part of ongoing efforts to address staffing challenges 504 clinical staff and health professionals were appointed in March 2025 to bolster healthcare capacity across Gauteng. The Department also retained all sessional employees who were in the system as of 31 March 2025.

"An additional 352 doctors and medical registrars are set to commence their training programme on 1 July 2025, enhancing clinical coverage and specialist services across facilities," explained the MEC.

These interventions are expected to reduce staff workloads, improve morale and lead to better patient outcomes and satisfaction.

The Department remains committed to filling prioritised vacancies within the constraints of its allocated Compensation of Employees budget and has initiated several measures to support clinical teams and improve service delivery. Improving the quality and accessibility of public healthcare remains a top priority.
