"We need to stop buying things we do not need with money we do not have to impress people who don't really care."
This powerful reminder was said by Motlatjo Nkadimeng from Old Mutual talking about financial discipline to set the tone for two inspiring Women's Month events hosted by the Gauteng Department of Health on 28 and 29 August 2025. Held under the theme "Building Resilient Economies for All," the events brought together women from across Gauteng's health sector to reflect, share, and learn.
The sessions focused on building financial confidence, nurturing mental well-being, and fostering mutual support - both personally and professionally. Miss Gauteng Exclusive finalist and Occupational Therapist at Weskoppies Hospital, Khanyisile Mabena, said the event reminded her of the power of unity. "It inspired us to empower one another, be kind to ourselves, and always support each other as beautiful, courageous, and capable women."
Mental health was another key focus. Nokulunga Ngubane from Employee Health and Wellness at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital spoke about the psychological pressures many women face in the workplace, including long hours, burnout, and bullying. "Depression is more than just feeling sad. It affects how you think, feel, and behave, and it can impact every part of your life. But it is treatable, and no one has to face it alone," she said, encouraging women to seek help early and support one another without judgment.
Basani Baloyi, Deputy Director-General for Corporate Services, representing the MEC for Health and Wellness, honoured the vital role women play in healthcare and society. "Women's leadership is not optional; it is essential for resilience and progress," she emphasised. Baloyi also acknowledged ongoing challenges such as gender-based violence, workplace bullying, and mental health struggles—issues that demand collective action.
She urged women to take meaningful steps forward: protect their well-being mentally, emotionally, and physically; champion equality in every workplace, community, and home; and lead with courage, whether managing teams, caring for patients, or supporting colleagues.
Nkadimeng reinforced the importance of planning for the future. "Building savings is essential for financial security. It's not just about how much you earn, but how wisely you manage and save what you have."
As the Women's Month celebrations drew to a close, one message stood out clearly: "… when women are empowered and supported, families grow stronger, workplaces become healthier, and communities thrive".
