The Mamelodi Regional Hospital in Tshwane has been hailed as the hallmark of a National Health Insurance-ready (NHI) public healthcare facility in Gauteng.
"Those who doubt our commitment to being NHI-ready, I say: look at Mamelodi Hospital. Once considered among facilities facing numerous challenges, it now stands as one of the best in the province and in the country. The transformation of this facility showcases what is possible when we combine vision, determination, and hard work.
This hospital is not just an example of progress; it is a signal, a model of how we are striving to deliver quality healthcare services to all people."
This was the assertion by the Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko during the official opening of the newly extended wards and refurbished units at the Tshwane hospital.
The MEC reiterated the Gauteng Department of Health's (GDoH) commitment to improving health infrastructure, not just to offer a better experience for patients but to ensure the full readiness for the rollout of the NHI.
"The NHI is a critical part of our national plan to provide universal health coverage. With improved facilities and systems like the Health Information System in place, we are building a foundation that will support the full implementation of NHI in Gauteng," stated MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko.
The extended wards at Mamelodi Hospital include the Paediatric Ward, Female Medical Ward and Surgical Ward, while the refurbished units include the Eye Clinic, Antiretroviral Clinic Waiting Area, HOD's Offices, Interns Restrooms, Radiology Department, Triage Waiting Area and Casualty Waiting Area.
The Paediatric Ward is now a 40-bedded unit after it received a boost of an additional 10 beds, while both the Female Medical and Surgical wards saw eight (8) new beds being added, making both 40-bedded as well. This will help mitigate the influx of patients that has consistently put pressure on these wards, ensuring the delivery of timeous improved patient care.
Matron Portia Seekoi who is responsible for the Paediatric Ward said that the newly extended unit will help improve staff morale of those working in the unit as they now have additional beds to improve admission capacity.
"Our hospital has an estimated catchment population of 1.4 million people, the newly extended ward will drastically ensure that we are able to service the growing community and need for quality healthcare services. This extension is already providing a conducive working environment for staff and will lead to change in attitude, which will foster good patient and staff relationship," said Seekoi.
Amongst other newly bought equipment at the hospital include a newly upgraded Mammogram machine, which is set to improve breast cancer screening services for the communities of Mamelodi and surrounding areas.
