Department of Social Development 2022/07/19 - 22:00

On Tuesday, the Social Welfare Services, Community Development, Regions and Institutions Director Deputy-General Onkemetse Kabasia visited the Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC). He met with the Head of Institution and Managers of the different sections.

The purpose of the interaction was to engage the staff on the process of the retrieval of services from the Bosasa Mogale Leseding CYCC.

Following the retrieval of services from privately-run Bosasa Mogale Leseding CYCC due to the termination of services, the children who were housed at the centre were rehoused in Walter Sisulu CYCC and Soshanguve CYCC. The retrieval of services also involved the reintegration of staff and operational services to the two centres.

Speaking to officials ,Kabasia said “I am doing an oversight visit to determine how the services we have retrieved from Bosasa have been integrated into the facility. This includes the staff, children and programmes”.

Kabasia also invited the staff to ask and raise any challenges that have arisen during the process. He recognised the importance of core staff and support staff in the running of the centre. He also emphasised that the newly integrated staff should have a united front with the existing staff when providing services to vulnerable children as this will ensure a smooth retrieval process and continued quality service delivery.

Managers presented the work they perform at the centre. Occupational therapist Mercy Mohale presented the different activities the children are exposed to as a form of therapy, which include baking, hairdressing and sewing.

“These activities are used to deal with some of the mental and emotional challenges the children face and instill a skill they can leave with”, explained Mohale.

Social Worker Supervisor, Phumlani Mbatha, spoke about the work they do, he indicated that there is an internal school which helps to maintain the education of undocumented children.
