The newly inducted Gauteng College of Nursing (GCON) Council has officially begun its term (2025 – 2029) with a clear focus on improving governance and aligning with provincial health goals.

The Council held its two-day induction session, on 6 and 7 May 2025, aimed to provide members with information on the Gauteng Department of Health's key priorities and essential governance knowledge, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities in overseeing GCON's operations.

This new Council represents a strategic step by the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) to strengthen accountability and governance at GCON. Over the next five years, the Council will develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with the GDoH's priorities, aiming to build a more responsive and resilient healthcare system.

Dr. Convy Baloyi, GCON Council Chairperson, explained, "The primary purpose of this induction is to expose GCON Council members to the nature, scope, and operation of both the Gauteng Department of Health and GCON, so that we can govern from a solid and sound information basis." This solid foundation will guide the Council's decisions as they work to improve nursing education and healthcare in Gauteng

Matlhogonolo Phale, Director for Nursing Education and Training at GCON, pointed out that the new leadership promises valuable opportunities for professional development. "For nurses, this leadership promises enhanced professional development through ongoing education, workshops, and upskilling initiatives," she said.

Phale also highlighted that the Council will ensure that academic programmes meet statutory standards, are facilitated by qualified educators, and promote research and community engagement. The Provincial Student Representative Council (SRC) will also be encouraged to foster a culture of innovation and research.

Looking ahead, Phale noted that the public can expect improvements in healthcare quality and patient safety, along with increased trust in nursing institutions across the province. The Council aims to bridge the gap between healthcare training and real-world patient outcomes, restoring confidence in GCON and its graduates.

The Council will also work closely with the MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko to embed a culture of excellence in governance and decision-making. A key focus will be integrating patient-centred care, education, and training that reflects the values of Ubuntu, promoting dignity, compassion, and efficiency.

In addition, Phale emphasised that accountability and transparency will be central to the Council's operations. "Accountability and transparency will be core principles, with a focus on clear reporting mechanisms and regular performance evaluations," she said. This approach will ensure that the Council remains responsive and accountable to healthcare professionals and the wider community.
