On Thursday, 05 June 2025, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, through Soshanguve Secure Care Centre (SSC), commemorated National Child Protection Week with poetry and drama.
Held under the theme “Working Together to End Violence Against Children,” the event gave young people a platform to express their voices and experiences through creative performances aimed at raising awareness and calling for action.National Child Protection Week, observed annually from May 29 to June 5, is a national initiative led by the Department of Social Development. It aims to promote the rights of children as enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa and the Children’s Act (Act No. 38 of 2005).Explaining the purpose of the day, Mr. Africa from the Centre said, “This week is about protecting you from harm, supporting you, and working with you. Know your rights and responsibilities and never stay silent about abuse. Report it to the authorities or a Social Worker.”The event emphasized the importance of community involvement in protecting children. The South African government calls on all citizens to take responsibility for ending the cycle of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. To further support victims, the Department has established a 24-hour Gender-Based Violence Command Centre. Anyone needing assistance can call the toll-free number 0800428428(0800GBV) or dial*120*7867# from any cellphone to request a call from a Social Worker. The performances at SSC reminded all in attendance that the fight for children's safety is a shared duty and that even in secure care, young people can lead the call for change.
