The DID Multidisciplinary A-Team conducts condition assessment of newly built Dr. W.K. Du Plessis LSEN School Learners in Ekurhuleni

The DID Multi-disciplinary Infrastructure A-Team established by MEC Jacob Mamabolo, early this year, to boost the pace of service delivery in the province, has hit the ground running, deploying the wide skills base of professionals on current projects.
It was business unusual on the 12 August 2025 when the A-Team visited the construction site of the newly built Dr. WK Du Plessis School for Learners with Special education Needs (LSEN) to conduct condition assessments of facilities. Part of the core tasks of the team is to unblock bottlenecks contributing to project delays, and improve execution. This will ensure that every project moves from planning to delivery with speed and precision. It was now the turn of the newly built school in the heart of Springs to undergo a full spectrum of technical assessment, following the completion of most of the facilities, while other construction works were also at advanced stages.
The old school that was demolished is now replaced with the new brick-and-mortar structure which is compliant with Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) standards. The new school will accommodate 570 learners from Grade R to Grade 12 and has a boarding facility.
The comprehensive scope of work includes the construction of classroom blocks, a library, science laboratories, an administration block, a refuse yard, a Guardhouse, boys' and girls' hostels, a workshop, multipurpose/dining hall, and external works.
The project manager said local participation and opportunities for previously disadvantaged individuals / contractors and Affirmable Business Enterprises, have been incorporated into the project while also maintaining high infrastructure standards and norms. The project has also provided skills development and training for the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) participants.
The demolition and replacement of the existing facility is progressing well with substantial portions of work executed. The majority of work has been successfully executed. The emphasis now shifts to the completion of the remaining external works and the finalisation of the new blocks, both of which are critical to meeting the overall project delivery time.
