On Saturday, 14 September 2024, Garankuwa Rearabilwe Child & Youth Care Centre (CYCC) in the Northern Corridor hosted its very own Mr. & Miss beauty pageant as part of Family Day celebrations.
For the beneficiaries of the Gauteng Department of Social Development residing at the centre this event was a remarkable opportunity to showcase their confidence and joy on the catwalk.
The beauty pageant was more than just a fun event ― it played a key role in family reunification efforts, with parents invited to witness their children proudly walking the runway for the first time. The participants lit up the stage in colourful swimsuits, beach shorts, princess gowns, and elegant suits, ready for their crowning moment.
Ms Keatlaretse Masoba, Head of Institution at Rearabilwe, highlighted the significance of Family Day for both the children and their parents. "It shows the hard work of our Social Workers and Care Workers, who tirelessly strive to improve the lives of our beneficiaries. Some of the contestants have been with us since they were babies, and seeing them smile with confidence makes us proud," said Masoba.
The event crowned a grade R learner as the queen and a grade 8 learner as the king of the Garankuwa Rearabilwe Child & Youth Care Centre. While their identities are protected, both winners expressed their desire to pursue modelling in the future. Their preparation for the event included rehearsals and practicing their walk, reflecting their dedication and excitement.
Masoba also emphasized the importance of education, urging the children to focus on their studies, while reassuring them of the institution's continued support. "Events like these boost their self-esteem and help them feel at home here," she added.
The venue was beautifully decorated in blue and white, with a table of judges placed to welcome the contestants as they strutted onto the stage. Uplifting music set the tone, and family members enthusiastically cheered on their loved ones. Some parents even danced in front of the stage to encourage their children, creating a warm and joyful atmosphere.
At the end of the day, all winners were crowned with sashes reading Mr. & Miss Ga-Rankuwa Rearabilwe, while first and second runners-up were also recognized. Makeup and hairstyling were done by a local community member who volunteered their time and talent to ensure the event was special for the children.
Despite budget challenges, Masoba and her team made sure Family Day was a memorable occasion, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.
