Following heavy rains in recent weeks, the Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo has moved to assure motorists that the Department's emergency road maintenance teams are on the ground attending to various damages inflicted onto the infrastructure.   
The heavy rainfalls have resulted in damages to the road infrastructure.  
MEC Mamabolo said "the Department has embarked on a maintenance and repair programme giving priority to those major routes affected mainly by poor road conditions (potholes) and debris removal". He added that this forms part of the Department's #SmartMobility campaign, a dedicated extra-capacity to catch up with backlogs of COVID19 lockdowns that adversely affected road maintenance program". 
He further urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and responsibility when driving in rainy conditions.    
"Drivers need to recognize that such conditions present unique challenges including, but not limited to, reduced visibility; reduced traction as well as increased time to bring a vehicle to a complete stop" cautioned the MEC.  
He further appealed to motorists to reduce speed, increase the following distances and turn on the headlights when driving in rainy conditions.  
Gauteng residents and motorists are also urged to be on high alert, be aware of possible flash floods and avoid crossing flooded bridges and roads.
