The newly refurbished Breast Cancer Centre of Excellence at Helen Joseph Hospital is expected to enhance early detection and diagnosis through better imaging and testing.

MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko re-opened the state-of-the-art facility in the midst of the Nelson Mandela Day Surgical Marathon in an effort to expand breast cancer treatment services, as well as provide a welcoming, dignified space for care for many women struggling with this life-threatening and dangerous disease.

The newly upgraded space is expected to bring hope to patients and their families during their most vulnerable moments.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said that the fight against cancer cannot be intensified only during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, but efforts to ensure early diagnosis and access to quality care must happen every month of the year.

"The re-opening of the breast centre of excellence is a reaffirmation of our commitment to the lives of women and men who are affected by this life changing cancer, and it is it about restoring hope, dignity and trust in the public health care system for those living with breast cancer.

"In my budget speech, I emphasised that oncology especially breast and prostate cancer remains a top priority. We are not only focusing on machines and buildings, but we are also investing the restoration of hope and dignity," said the MEC.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in South Africa. It is the leading cancer among white and Asian women, and the second most common among black and coloured women. According to the World Health Organisation, if breast cancer is detected early, more than 90% of patients survive for many years.

Formally known as the Breast Care Clinic, this centre was established in 2005 and treats just over 400 patients a month. It recently underwent refurbishments. It is now headed by Dr. Neo Mabe, a breast surgeon with 18 years experience in the medical field. She is also a senior consultant and a senior lecturer at the University of Witwatersrand.

"We are excited about the opening of the newly refurbished breast centre, and we look forward to treating patients in a conducive and well-equipped, patient centered which will essentially improve and enhance patient experience of care," said Mabe.

In addition, the acting CEO of the hospital, Dr. Zakhele Zitha said that the centre brings new hope to breast cancer patients.

"This centre seeks to be that intervention and beacon of hope for those suffering from breast cancer.  The oncoplastic reconstructive surgeries will furthermore bring dignity to who had undergone breast related surgeries," he said.

Services offered by the Breast care centre include surveillance, diagnosis, multi-disciplinary treatment, and breast reconstruction and reduction for medical reasons only.    The centre operates on Tuesdays from 07:30-15:30 for new patients and Thursdays from 07:30-15:30 for follow-up patients.
