Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, launched the Gender-Based Violence Brigades in Soweto on Saturday, 31 October 2020, as part of the provincial government's response against the scourge of gender-based violence.

The Gender-Based Violence Brigades are expected to be in the frontline in their respective wards within the Gauteng province, going door-to-door to educate and create awareness on the impact of gender-based violence.

MEC Mazibuko said she was delighted that the South African Police Service has deployed women to #GBVBrigades,

"We must caution women against withdrawal of gender-based violence cases. I am delighted that this is what we have been advocating that victim empowerment centre at police stations must be managed by women. Gauteng is amongst the highest Gender-Based Violence hotspots with Dobsonville, in Soweto   topping the list,'' said MEC Mazibuko.

Mazibuko further noted that it was important to educate women that they cannot live in abusive relationships forever, they must report these elements.

She added that women must break the silence of abuse that they endure. She said the provincial government was committed in fighting gender-based violence.  She donated vehicles to the police, to utilise them especially in transporting victims of gender-based violence. These vehicles will also be used to accompany victims to the hospital and to court.

In addition, Community Police Forum Chairperson, Lucky Mbonambi, based at Moroka Police Station said they were ready as the force multiplier in the fight against crime to contribute to fighting the scourge of gender based violence.  Lieutenant Colonel Ngubane from Moroka Police Station said there was a problem of sexual assault cases perpetrated mainly by young people.
