Survey helps to improve the quality of healthcare services - 06 July 2025

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is committed to continuously improving the quality of healthcare services provided to the public.

To achieve this, the Department is conducting the annual Patient Experience of Care (PEC) survey, which serves as a vital tool to understand how patients, their families, and supporting persons perceive the care they receive at public health institutions. The insights gained from this survey helps the Department to identify strengths in service delivery and pinpoint areas that require improvement.

The 2025 PEC survey is underway from 01 July to 15 August across all public health facilities in Gauteng. This includes hospitals, out-patient departments (OPDs), Primary Health Care (PHC) clinics, and Mental Health Care institutions. Each facility will provide tailored questionnaires to ensure that the feedback collected is relevant to the specific type of care received.

Participation in the survey is voluntary, and all responses are treated with strict confidentiality. Patients, as well as their families and supporting persons, are encouraged to share their honest experiences. The feedback will directly inform quality improvement plans at each institution, and the results will be shared with the community to promote transparency and accountability.

In the PEC survey report for the 2024/25 financial year (FY), Gauteng public health facilities received an overall PEC score of 85%, a 1% improvement from the 2023/24 FY overall score. Out of the 1 492 387 responses received from users accessing healthcare in these facilities, 1 263 690 were positive.

Service areas assessed for the PEC survey include access to services, availability and use of medicine, patient safety, cleanliness and infection prevention and control, values and attitudes and patient waiting times.

MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko has urged everyone who has received care in Gauteng public facilities to take a few moments to complete the PEC survey.

"Your voice matters. By participating, you are helping us build a more responsive, compassionate, and effective healthcare system for all in Gauteng," said the MEC.
