Department of Education 2025/06/17 - 22:00
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has finalised the transition of the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) to the Office of the Premier (OoP). This significant move, effective from Monday, 2 June 2025, marks a bold new chapter for GCRA, aligning it more closely with provincial priorities aimed at empowering youth and boosting human capital development.
The change follows months of careful planning and consultation, led by the Provincial Management and Oversight Group (PMOG). The process concluded on Friday, 30 May 2025, after inputs from unions, employer representatives and a strong focus on staff well-being.
Dorah Moloi, Acting Deputy Director General: Corporate Management and Project Manager for the transition, stated, "The migration ensures GCRA is better positioned to deliver on its new mandate and contribute to the economic transformation agenda of our province."
Moloi acknowledged the historical resilience of the GCRA team, noting its adaptability amid continual change, "GCRA has always evolved and it's still standing strong. That's a testament to its people." She said.
The GCRA will continue to drive Bursaries, Internships and Learnerships, Skills Development and Training, Youth Empowerment Initiatives and Post-School Education Support. These programmes, according to Moloi, will now operate under the direct guidance of the Premier's Office, enhancing coordination across government departments and improving impact across the province.
The transition was conducted under full compliance with job security provisions, with all stakeholders actively consulted. Staff also received psycho-social support to ease the transition.
Hulisani Tshikovhi, Director: Organisation Development, extended sincere thanks to everyone involved, "This process was not without its challenges. But today, we stand united, having delivered on a vision that will redefine youth development in Gauteng," He said.
He also reassured the GCRA staff of the continued GDE support throughout the post-transition period. This migration is more than a change in reporting lines, it represents a strategic realignment to ensure GCRA can deliver faster, more targeted and inclusive development initiatives. Now reporting directly to the Premier, GCRA is poised to become a provincial engine for education, innovation and youth empowerment.
GCRA staff have received their transfer letters, and the Human Resources department will commence updating their records on PERSAL to ensure their service history is accurately reflected under the Office of the Premier.
