In a resounding show of support, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, on Wednesday, 13 September 2023, reaffirmed the provincial government's unwavering dedication to creating employment opportunities for the youth of Swaneville on the West Rand.

This commitment was made following a recent visit by Premier Lesufi and Members of the Executive Council to the area in response to a heartfelt plea for intervention by Simphiwe, a young resident from the area.

Simphiwe's call for assistance came during a Ntirhisano Outreach Programme over the weekend, where he highlighted the numerous challenges faced by the youth in his community.

Through the Nasi iSpani Mass Recruitment Programme, Premier Lesufi expressed the Gauteng government's commitment to prioritise the young people of Swaneville, announcing that an additional 22 000 individuals will soon receive their appointment letters under this initiative.

"Nasi iSpani is not a mere campaign or gimmick; it's not meant to create false expectations but a genuine response to the high unemployment rate in our province. We are fast-tracking this programme and must establish a comprehensive database of unemployed individuals in Swaneville," emphasised Lesufi, who hoped that unemployed youth had taken the initiative to apply for advertised jobs.

Launched on 16 June, 2023, this pioneering programme has set its sights on alleviating unemployment and fostering accessible job opportunities within the province.

With resounding resonance, the Nasi Ispani Mass Recruitment drive garnered an astounding response, drawing over 1.3 million applicants from online and traditional channels.

On the launch day, thousands of hopefuls and unemployed residents formed queues at various walk-in centres. In this atmosphere, the anticipation carried a palpable air of hope, a stark yet inspiring counterpoint to the stark realities of unemployment.

Gauteng, representative of broader South Africa, grapples with the weight of unemployment statistics. According to Statistics South Africa, South Africa's unemployment rate increased to 32.9% in the first three months of 2023.

One vocal youth, Nkosinathi Gumede, expressed frustration with local councillors regarding addressing youth unemployment and crime in the area.

"We are frustrated with our councillors. When job opportunities are at Harmony Mine, please do not direct us to ward councillors. Our community grapples with high crime levels, and most youth are unemployed. We are pleading for job opportunities."

Responding to these challenges, Premier Lesufi pledged to engage with local councillors to address the distrust between the youth and their representatives.

He clarified, "We are not overriding councillors, but rather, we are establishing a labour desk in collaboration with ward committees. This labour desk will comprise nine members, five women."

Addressing the pressing issue of rising crime levels in the area, Premier Lesufi declared, "Our society is weary of criminal activities, and while rehabilitation and support programs are our responsibility, we must not be held hostage by crime. I have met with all tavern owners and urged them to operate responsibly within the confines of their licenses, as illegal operations contribute to increased criminal activities."

Furthermore, the premier outlined the province's commitment to combating crime by strategically deploying CCTV cameras in high-crime areas, implementing e-panic buttons, and undertaking random raids to deter criminal elements.

Accompanying Premier Lesufi in his engagement with the youth of Swaneville were members of his Executive Council, including MEC for Education Matome Chiloane, MEC for Treasury Jacob Mamabolo, MEC for Economic Development Tasneem Motara, MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko, and MEC for Health Nomantu Nkomo - Ralehoko.

The premier charged his executive council with returning to the area to address various pressing issues, including assisting individuals without identification documents at Home Affairs, promoting skills development, initiating social relief programs, and fostering arts, sports, and agricultural activities.

The MEC for Arts and Culture has been tasked with organising an open day to attract local talent and skills. In contrast, the MEC for Education has been charged with engaging in job placements, internships, learnerships, and bursaries.

Moreover, Premier Lesufi announced that an agreement is in the final stages of negotiation with all relevant stakeholders to replace transformers in affected communities, thus addressing critical infrastructure needs.

As a gesture of progress, the premier pledged that the community hall will have access to free Wi-Fi starting on 25 September 2023, providing greater connectivity opportunities for Swaneville's youth.
