Department of Health 2025/09/04 - 22:00

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is taking bold and strategic steps to restore the Dunswart Provincial Laundry Service to full operational capacity, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining high standards of hygiene and patient care across the province.

Despite facing significant challenges including aging infrastructure and staff shortages, the Dunswart continues to deliver an impressive output of between 40 000 to 45 000 pieces of laundry daily, ensuring that hospitals and clinics are consistently supplied with clean linen. Currently operating at 75% capacity, the Department is actively implementing solutions to return the facility to full strength.

Dunswart plays a critical role in supporting key healthcare institutions such as Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, Tambo Memorial Hospital, Tembisa Hospital, and 25 clinics, including services for Gauteng Emergency Medical Services. Clean linen is a cornerstone of infection control and patient dignity, and the Department is unwavering in its efforts to uphold this standard.

To address operational challenges, the GDoH has previously partnered with private laundry services during peak periods and in times of water shortages or equipment breakdowns. This proactive approach underscores the Department's dedication to uninterrupted service delivery and patient safety.

In a major boost to infrastructure, Dunswart and Masakhane laundries have been earmarked for upgrades under a R50 million recapitalisation programme funded by the National Department of Health for the 2025/26 financial year. This investment will enable the refurbishment and replacement of outdated machinery, significantly enhancing the efficiency and reliability of laundry services.

Additionally, the Department is exploring staffing enhancements to ensure that the facility can operate at full capacity. Recruitment and training initiatives are being considered to strengthen the workforce and improve turnaround times.

The GDoH assures the public that clean linen will continue to be available at all provincial health facilities. This commitment reflects the Department's broader mission to deliver quality healthcare services and maintain a safe, hygienic environment for all patients.
